If you’re dreaming of exploring Times Square, road-tripping along Route 66, or sipping cocktails under the stars in Los Angeles, there’s a bit of prep work to do.

Getting into the USA as an Australian isn’t complicated, but you do need to follow a few rules. This guide will walk you through every step so you’re ready to fly with confidence.

Do You Need a Visa?

The answer is probably not! If you’re an Australian citizen travelling to the USA for less than 90 days for tourism, business, or family visits, you can likely use the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). But you’ll still need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization).

What’s the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?

The VWP allows Australians to visit the USA without a visa for up to 90 days. It’s great for short holidays, business trips, or even attending a conference.

What do you need?

  • Australian passport with an electronic chip (e-passport)
  • Return or onward ticket (you can’t arrive without a plan to leave)
  • An ESTA approval (more on that below.

The ESTA – Your Ticket to Stress-Free Entry

The ESTA is a quick online application that tells U.S. Customs you’re a safe and welcome visitor. It’s a must-have if you’re using the VWP. Here’s how to get yours:

  • Apply online at least 72 hours before you fly.
  • Pay the fee (about USD 21).
  • Wait for approval, which usually takes a few minutes to a few hours.

Once approved, your ESTA is valid for two years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first).

What If You’re Staying Longer Than 90 Days?

If you’re planning to stay longer than 90 days or you’re heading to the USA for reasons beyond tourism or business, you’ll need a non-immigrant visa.

Which Visa Do You Need?

  • B-1 Visa: For business trips, like attending a conference or negotiating contracts.
  • B-2 Visa: For tourism, visiting family, or medical treatment.

How to Apply for a Visa

  • Fill out Form DS-160 online.
  • Pay the fee (varies by visa type).
  • Book an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Australia.
  • Attend your interview with the required documents (i.e. proof of your travel plans and intent to return to Australia).

The Exclusive E-3 Visa for Aussies

If you’ve scored a job offer in the U.S., the E-3 Visa might be your golden ticket. This work visa is only available to Australians. It’s valid for 2 years (with unlimited renewals) and is perfect for people in “specialty occupations” — jobs requiring a degree or specific expertise.

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A U.S. job offer (letter from your future employer)
  • Proof of qualifications (like a degree or work experience)
  • An interview at the U.S. Consulate

Passport Requirements

No matter how short your trip, you must have a valid passport. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your passport must be valid for the entire time you’re in the USA.
  • E-passports are a must for VWP and ESTA applications. Check for the little chip symbol on the cover.
  • Kids need passports too – yes, even babies. Everyone in your family needs their passport.

Global Entry Program

Big news for Aussies! Starting January 2025, Australians can join the USA’s Global Entry Program, which gives you fast-track entry at U.S. airports. Imagine breezing through border control while others wait in line.

How It Works

  • Apply online and pay a small fee.
  • Complete a background check.
  • Attend an in-person interview (at select U.S. airports or Australian locations).

Once approved, you’ll also get access to TSA PreCheck, making airport security faster too!

Don’t let red tape ruin your dream trip. Start your ESTA application early, check your passport, and get your travel plans in order.
