Bali Entry Requirements for Australians: What You Need to Know

Disclaimer: This information is general. Always refer to the official resources or websites of the relevant country for the most up-to-date visa and entry requirements.

Bali is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Australians.

Whether it’s enjoying the beaches, exploring temples, or tasting delicious local food, Bali offers an incredible getaway.

But before you pack your bags, it’s important to understand the entry requirements. Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Check Your Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Double-check its condition too—damaged passports, even with minor tears, can lead to entry being denied. If in doubt, renew it before you travel to avoid problems at the border.

2. Understand Visa Options

Australians need a visa to enter Bali, and the most common choice is the Visa on Arrival (VoA).

This visa:

  • Costs IDR 500,000 (around AUD 50).
  • Allows a 30-day stay, which can be extended for another 30 days.
  • Is available upon arrival or as an e-VoA online.

For longer trips, the B211A Visit Visa lets you stay up to 180 days but needs to be arranged before you arrive.

3. Pay the Bali Tourism Levy

Starting February 2024, all visitors to Bali must pay a tourism levy of IDR 150,000 (about AUD 15).

You can pay online through the “Love Bali” website before your trip or at the airport when you arrive. This fee goes towards cultural and environmental initiatives in Bali.

4. Declare Your Goods

Indonesia requires all travellers to declare the items they’re bringing in. You can complete the Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) online up to 48 hours before you arrive.

This saves time at the airport and ensures compliance with regulations on restricted items like medications without prescriptions or large amounts of cash.

5. What About Vaccinations?

COVID-19 vaccination is no longer required for entry into Bali, but it’s recommended to stay up to date with standard travel vaccinations such as hepatitis A and typhoid. Check with your GP if you’re unsure about what you might need for your trip.

6. Proof of Onward Travel

Immigration officers may ask for proof of a return or onward ticket. This shows you’re planning to leave Indonesia within the allowed visa period

Save your flight confirmation in both digital and printed formats for easy access.

7. Be Ready to Show Funds

Indonesian authorities may ask you to prove you have sufficient funds for your stay, typically around AUD 1,500.

This can be shown through a bank statement, credit card, or other financial documents. It’s not always required, but it’s good to be prepared.

8. Travel Insurance is a Must

While not mandatory, travel insurance is essential for peace of mind. Ensure your policy covers:

  • Medical expenses, including emergencies.
  • Cancellations or delays.
  • Accidents involving scooters or vehicles if you plan to hire one.

Healthcare and transport issues can be expensive, so it’s worth investing in a solid policy.

9. Final Tips for a Smooth Trip

To ensure a stress-free experience, keep these in mind:

  • Check official travel websites for updates before you leave.
  • Carry both digital and physical copies of key documents, like your passport and visa.
  • Pack carefully, avoiding restricted items like certain medications without prescriptions.

A bit of preparation goes a long way in making your trip enjoyable.
